Guido ENGELMANN (born on June 5th, 1876 in Olmütz, Moravia/Austro-Hungaria [Olomouc/Czech Republic]. He studied medicine at the University of Vienna, graduated in 1899 and became "Dr.med.". He was demonstrator with Prof. Zuckerkandl; assistant at the surgical university clinic in Vienna, with Prof. v. Hoffa in Berlin and at the Surgical Department of the Viennese Allgemeinen Poliklinik. He habilitated in 1920 and became "Privatdozent" for orthopedic surgery at the Medical School of the University of Vienna. He was a member of the Medical Society in Vienna (Gesellschaft der Ärzte in Wien) and of the Freie Orthopädische Vereinigung in Vienna. He was a specialist for spine rachitis and hereditaty hip luxation and was author of many scientifc publications such as "Konstitutionspathologie in der Orthopädie" (1928) or "Einführung in die Orthopädie" (1929). He was persecuted in times of Nazism as a Jew lost his position and was thrown out of the university on April 22nd, 1938. He was able to emigrate to Los Angeles/USA, as did his son Dr. Leopold Franz (Francis L.) Engelmann who was also forced to leave the University of Vienna, where he was an assistant professor at the I Surgical University Clinic. Guido ENGELMANN deceased in Los Angeles, California/USA in 1959.
