Georg TINTNER, born on May 22nd, 1917, in Vienna/Austria (entitled residency ('heimatberechtigt') for Vienna/Austria, Citizenship: Austria), son of Alfons Tintner (major), lived in Wien 1, Wildpretmarkt 8.
As a child he was a member of the Wiener Sängerknaben (1926–30), began composing and finished High School in 1935 with the "Matura" from the Amerling-Gymnasium. In 1935-1937 he started his studies at the "Akademie für Musik u. darstellende Kunst" (today: University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna), in composition (Joseph Marx), piano (Berta Jahn-Beer, Alexander Wunderer) and conducting (Felix Weingartner) and worked as a part-time répétiteur at the "Volksoper" in Vienna. At the same time he was also enrolled at the Philosophical School of the University of Vienna and took courses in Musicology in the 3rd year of his studies in the spring term of 1938. From 1937 until April 1938 he was also Kapellmeister at the "Volksoper".

He emigrated via Yugoslavia (Sept-Dec 1938) to Great Britain (London 1939) and due to the lack of a working permit further on to Auckland, New Zealand in 1940, where he became a composer and conductor.

1940–45 he was choirmaster at Mt Albert Presbyterian Church and taught piano (1944 completion of Sonata in A for violin and piano), 1943–53 he worked at a poultry farm, 1947–53 Conductor of the Auckland Choral Society, 1948–53 Conductor of the Auckland String Players, Resident conductor, National Opera of Australia, Arts Council opera tours in Australian countryside as pianist/conductor, 1957–63 Resident conductor, Australian Elizabethan Theatre Trust Opera (1959 completion of The Ellipse for string quartet and soprano), 1964 Music Director of the New Zealand Opera, 1965 Conductor/coach, Sutherland-Williamson Grand Opera season (Australia), 1966–67 Music Director, Cape Town Municipal Orchestra, 1967–70 Coach and conductor, Sadler’s Wells Opera (English National Opera), 1970–74 Music Director, Western Australian Opera, 1974–76 Senior Resident Conductor, Australian Opera, 1977–87 Music Director, Queensland Theatre (Philharmonic) Orchestra, 1987–94 Music Director, Symphony Nova Scotia (Canada), 1995–98 Recording Anton Bruckner’s symphonies for the Naxos label, 1995 Fellow of the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts

He was awarded with multiple Honorary Doctoral degrees (1988 Dr.h.c. of Laws, Dalhousie University /Canada, 1995 Dr.h.c. of Laws, St Francis Xavier University/Canada, 1999 Dr. h.c. of the University, Griffith University/Australia). In 1992 he received the Grand Decoration of Honor for Services to the Republic of Austria, in 1994 the Decoration of Honor for Services to the state of Vienna in Silver, in 1998 he became a Member of the Order of Canada, in 1999 he won the Portia White Prize (Canada) and 2011 the Bruckner Medal of Honor, Bruckner Society of America. He died on October 2nd, 1999.
