Eugenie STEUERMAN (married: Giselle Eugenie VON GRUNEBAUM), born on December 21
st, 1917 in Vienna/Austria (entitled residency ('heimatberechtigt') for Drohobyez/Poland, Citizenship: Poland), daughter of Markus Steuermann (merchant), lived in Vienna's 20
th district, Nordbahnstrasse 10/12, was enrolled finally in the fall term 1937/38 at the Philosophical School and took courses in Ancient Hinstory and Oriental Studies.
She emigrated to England/UK in April 1939, where she lived in London, Camebridge and Liverpool and was able to continue her studies at the
University of London 1939-1941. In July 1941, she emigrated further to the U.S. via Trinidad, Uruguay and Argentina, arriving in New York City, NY on August 1941, and later studied at the
University of California at Los Angeles, earning a "B.A." and an "M.A." in Library Science.
She had married Dr. Gustav Edmund von Grunebaum (1909-1972), also an emigrant from Vienna, in Washington DC on September 9, 1941; they had two daughters Tessa Jennifer (1948) and Claudia Constance (1951). She had become an American citizen on January 23
rd, 1945, and lived with her family in Los Angeles until the end of her life. She worked as a librarian at the U
niversity of California at Los Angeles (UCLA), beginning in May 1968 in the Acquisitions Department, headed the Gifts and Exchanges Department beginning in 1975, and was a Full Librarian at the
UCLA University Library beginning in 1978, and was also active for many years in the
UCLA Faculty Women Association and the
UCLA Emeriti Association.
Her husband became Professor of History and founding director of the
Near Eastern Center at the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) and was an expert on classical Islamic culture (the Center was later named for him).
Giselle Eugenie von Grunebaum, née Steuermann, died in Los Angeles on August 14
th, 2001, and is buried at Westwood Memorial Park in Los Angeles, California/USA.
