Emil SCHLANDER (born on September 14th, 1888 in Oberburg near Cilli, Lower Styria, Austro-Hungaria [Gornji Grad/Slovenia], died on November 30th, 1978 in Vienna) was lecturer ('Privatdozent') for Oto-, Rhino- und Laryngologie at the Medical School of the University of Vienna.
He was persecuted in times of Nazism as a Jew lost his position and was thrown out of the university in 1940. He had studied medicine at the University of Graz/Styria and graduated there in 1914. After military service in World War I from 1914 to 1918 (in the end as a military surgeon), he went to Vienna and became assistant at the university clinic for ear, nose and throat medicine (Prof. Neumann) in 1918 and "first assistant" on March 1st, 1920. He habilitated in 1932 and could at fist continue with his work in 1938, even after the expulsion of the clinic-head for racist reason. But in 1940 he himself had to leave for racist reason - he lost his venia legendi and he was forced to leave the clinic and the university. He did not emigrate and in 1945 he could return to the university. He was appointed extraordinary professor (a.o. Prof.) and head of the clinic (formally on June 29, 1946). On September 30, 1950 he got the title (but not the position) of a full professor (ao.Prof. (tit. o.Prof.)) and on January 18, 1956 he finlly became full professor (o. Prof.). He was the head of the clinic from 1945 until his emeritation on September 30, 1959. He was president of the Austrian Oto-Laryngolog. Society, author of many articles (especially for brain complications following otitis media) and books (e.g. "Histology of ulceration at Pyramidenspitze", 1926).
