Bernhard CINADER, born on March 30th, 1919 in Vienna/Austria (entitled residency ('heimatberechtigt') for Vienna/Austria, Citizenship: Austria), son of Leo Cinader (merchant), lived in Vienna 7th district, Kellermanngasse 3, was enrolled finally in the spring term 1938 at the Medical School in the 1st year of his studies. He emigrated to Great Britain in 1938, was sent to Australia on the "Dunera" in 1940, but returned to England in late 1941. Bernhard Cinader succeeded in completing his studies: At the University of London he was graduated B.Sc. in 1944, Ph.D. in Biochemistry in 1948 and Doctor of Science (D.SC) in immunology in 1958. Cinader emigrated to Canada in 1958, where he became Head of the immunochemistry subdivision of the Ontario  Cancer Institute in Toronto. In 1969, he was promoted as professor of medical cell biology, medical genetics and clinical biochemistry at the University of Toronto, where he founded the Institute of Immunology (1971-1980, full department 1984).
Cinader was founder and first president of the Canadian Society of Immunology (1966-1969) and of the International Union of Immunological Societies (1969-1974). He received numerous honours, e.g. the Paris' Society of Chemical Biology Award (1954), the Queen's Silver Jubilee Medical (1978) and the Royal Society of Canada's Thomas W. Eadie Medal (1982).  In 1985 he was named an 'Officer of the Order of Canada'. Bernhard Cinader died of a heart attack in Toronto on March 3th, 2001. The 'Bernhard Cinader Award' of the Canadian Society for Immunology was named after Dr. 'Hardy' Cinader.
