Bernhard ASCHNER (born on January 27th, 1883 in Vienna, died on March 9th, 1960 in New York) was private lecturer ("Privatdozent"). for obstetrics and gynecology at the Medical School of the University of Vienna. After graduating from high school in Vienna, he studied medicine at the University of Vienna and received his doctorate in 1907 ("Dr.med.univ.", [M.D.]) and became a clinical doctor. In 1913/14 he was an assistant at the University-Clinic for Gynecology and Obstetrics in Halle / Saale (Germany). He habilitated there in 1914 and 1918 also at the University of Vienna ("Privatdozent für Gynäkologie und Geburtshilfe"). In between, he served in the Austro-Hungarian Army in First World War (1914-1918) as a regiment doctor. He has published more than 150 papers on scientific medical subjects. He was persecuted in times of Nazism as a Jew for racist reason, lost his position on April 22nd 1938 and was forced to leave of the university. He had to flee and was able to emigrate to the USA (New York). He opened a private practice there and worked at Stuyvesant and Lebnaon Hospital, where he also ran the arthritis clinics. He died on March 9th, 1960 in New York / USA.
