Elisabeth Maria MAY (married DICKINSON), born on November 17
th, 1918 in Vienna/Austria (entitled residency ('heimatberechtigt') for Gross-Schweinbarth/Lower Austria, Citizenship: Austria), daughter of Dr. Richard May (physician in Gross-Schweinbarth/Lower Austria), lived in Vienna's 18
th district, Martinstrasse 14, in 1938 in Vienna's 2
nd district, Taborstrasse 51 and then in Vienna's 6
th district, Strohmeyergasse 6, was enrolled finally in the spring term 1938 at the Medical School in the 2
nd year of her studies.
In 1938, after the takeover of power of National-Socialism she was forced to quit her studies for racist reason and to leave the University of Vienna (Leaving Certificate ("Abgangszeugnis") was issued on November 7
th, 1938).
Her father was fired in 1938 for racist reasons as a community doctor and lost his pension. Her sister Gertrude May (later: McMahon) and her parents escaped from Austria on July 19
th, 1939 and made a detour to Australia, where they arrived in Brisbane with the
SS David Crocket on December 11
th, 1945. In August 1951 he became Australian citizen and lived near Sydney until the late 1950s.
Whether Elizabeth Maria Dickinson (née May) could also emigrate to Australia - or another country of exile - has not yet been decided.
