Stefan Lendt (früher: Lewisohn)

Born: 10-04-1910
Faculty: Law School
Category: Deprivation of academic degree
Stefan LENDT (LEWISOHN, later: Stephen F. Lendt) was born on October 4th, 1910 in Sacka, Saxonia (entiteled residency ('heimatberechtigt') for Vienna) as son of Jacques und Betty (nee Tritsch) Lendt and lived in Vienna's 2nd district in Lilienbrunngasse 2/6. He studied Law at the Law School at the University of Vienna and graduated on July 16th, 1934 with the academic degree 'Dr. iur.'. In times of Nazism he was persecuted for racist reason but could emigrate to Switzerland, Zurich. After his emigration he was denaturalized from the German Reich on May 15, 1941 and he was deprived of his academic degree on July 17th, 1942 – like his brother Karl Lendt who had studied Political Economics and graduated in 1927 – with the racist argument, that he as a Jew was not considered dignified an academic degree of a German university ('eines akademischen Grades einer deutschen Hochschule unwuerdig'). It took 13 years since the deprivation – and a very long time since the end of Nazism – until the regranting of the doctorate took finally place on May 15th, 1955. He could emigrate to the USA after 1938 and became a naturalized U.S. citizen (Stephen F. Lendt) in 1947. He married Henrietta M. Coll in 1951. For 22 years worked as a contract review officer at the Department of Defense / Defense Logistics Agency in Columbus, Ohio. He retired in 1985 and received the Distinguished Career Award. He died on January 5 1991 in Columbus, Ohio

Lit.: information from his nephew Christopher K. Lendt, White Plains, NY, USA 06/2016.
