Wilhelm KNÖPFELMACHER (born on August 25th, 1866 in Boskowitz, Moravia/Austro-Hungaria [Boskovice/Czech Republic], died on April 14th, 1938 in Vienna by suicide, erroneously also often mentioned: on April 23rd, 1938) was in 1938 extraordinary emerited professor for Kinderheilkunde at the Medical School of the University of Vienna.
Knöpfelmacher studied medicine at the universities of Vienna and Prague. After he was graduated Dr.med. in Vienna in 1891, he worked at the II. Medical Clinic with Prof. Kahler and between 1894 and 1900 as resident (assistant physician) at the municipal Karolinen Children's Hospital in Vienna 9th district, Sobieskigasse 31. In 1901 he became head of the hospital. In the same year he was promoted "Privatdozent" at the University of Vienna, and in 1911 ao. He published several scientific books, e.g. "Erkrankungen des Neugeborenen", "Säuglings- und Kinderpflege" (1910).
He lived in Vienna 9th distrcit, Günthergasse 3.
In 1934 he retired.
Wilhelm Knöpfelmacher was persecuted in times of Nazism as a Jew, lost his position and was thrown out of the university in 1938. A month after the "Anschluss" he committed suicide.
