Franz Karl Adolf Ernst BAUER, born on January 29
th, 1917 in Vienna/Austria (entitled residency ('heimatberechtigt') for Vienna, Citizenship: Austria), died on February 10
th, 1976, was the son of
Univ.-Prof. Dr. Julius Bauer (university professor) and
Marianne Melitta Bauer-Jokl. He lived in Vienna 9th district, Mariannengasse 15 and was enrolled finally in spring term 1938 at the Medical School of the University of Vienna in the 4th year of his studies (Leaving Certificate ('Abgangszeugnis') was issued on January 26
th, 1939).
Franz Bauer emigrated to Switzerland in 1938 and continued his studies at the University of Geneve. In 1940 he emigrated together with his family to New Orleans/USA, where he finished his medical studies at the Louisiana State University School of Medicine and subsequently served an internship until 1950 at the Charity Hospital of Louisiana in New Orleans and later a residency of internal medicine at Los Angeles County General Hospital. In 1950 Franz Bauer was certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine.
Between 1942 and 1946 he served as major in the Medical Corps of US-Air Force in Los Angeles.
In 1943 he married Marjorie Frantz, in 1952 their daughter Anne Kathryn Bauer was born.
From 1951 to 1956 he was head of the Radioisotope Service at the Veterans Administration Center in Los Angeles and was from 1952 associate/assistant clinical professor of medicine and radiology at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). He worked with Benedikt Cassen, inventor of the radioisotope scan, and participated in the early clinical tests of the scanner (esp. thyroid scanning). He was one of the first researchers, who used radioactive iodine for the treatment of hyperthrose. Other studies dealt with the use of radioactive phosphor.
Between 1956 and 1960 Bauer was associate clinical professor of medicine and coordinator of radioisotope-research at University of Southern California and medical director of Los Angeles County Hospital at the same time. After that he was professor at Medical School, UCLA, and head of the medical service at Harbor General Hospital until 1965. From 1969 to 1974 Bauer was dean of the School of Medicine of University of Southern California.
From 1957 to 1959 he was president of the Southern California Chapter of the Society of Nuclear Medicine and in 1958 vice-president of the society. Besides, he worked as consultant for the Oak Ridge Institute of Nuclear Studies.
In 1971 he was honored by the World Federation of Nuclear Medicine and Biology and in 1974 he was awarded the Distinguished Service-Award by the Intra-Science Research Foundation.
Franz Bauer died on February, 10
th, 1976.
