Helene KAUFMANN, born on August 14
th, 1918 in Arad/Romania (entitled residency ("eimatberechtigt") for Vienna/Austria, Citizenship 1938: Austria), daughter of Dr. Eduard Kaufmann (1890-1965, lawyer) and Elvira, née Multasch, divorced Kaufmann. Helene Kaufmann lived with mer mother in Vienna's 3
rd district, Pfarrhofgasse 16 and was enrolled finally in the spring term 1938 at the Law School in the 2
nd year of her studies (in the spring term 1938 she could continue her studies in the context of the Numerus clausus of Jewish Students until the end of the term).
Her father had received his doctorate in law from the University of Vienna in 1914 and had been admitted to the bar in Vienna since 1921 with his own law office in Vienna's 1
st district, Freyung 6. Due to National Socialism blood laws, he was forced to close the law office and flee Vienna in 1938. He had been divorced since 1928 and remarried in 1937 to Ernestine Stransky née Zerner (b.orn 1897), who was also divorced.
Together with him and her stepmother, Helene Julia Kaufmann was able to flee Vienna in time and reached the USA via France and England: on December 13
th, they were able to obtain their US entry visas in Paris and then boarded the steamship "
SS Normandie" in Southampton/Great Britain on January 28
th, 1939 and arrived in New York City, NY on February 2
nd, 1939. Her father continued to live in New York and worked there as a lawyer - among other things, he represented emigrated former lawyers vis-à-vis the Austrian authorities until he died in New York in 1965.
Helen J. Kaufmann lived in Manhattan, New York City, NY, in 1940 with her biological mother Elvira, who had also emigrated to New York from London via Southampton in November 1939, and worked as a secretary in a law firm.
Helen J. Kaufmann died on May 24th, 2004 in the USA and is burried at Beth David Cemetery in Elmont, Nassau County, NY/USA.
