Emil GLAS (born on March 14th, 1877 in Vienna, died on May 19th, 1958 in the USA) was lecturer ('Dozent') for laryngorhinology at the Medical School of the University of Vienna.
After having graduated as a medical doctor from the Medical School of the University of Vienna in 1901, he worked for several years at the Anatomical Department (head: Emil Zuckerkandl), at the Pathological-anatomical Department (Anton Weichselbaum), at the Surgery Department of the University of Vienna (Albert Mosetig) and in particular at the University clinic for ear, nose, throat-diseases (Ottokar Chiari). He was promoted to lecturer ('Privatdozent') of laryngorhinology in 1910. In 1927 he was awarded the title of professor. Emil Glas worked as professor at a children's hospital ('Karolinen-Kinderspital') in Vienna and as medical specialist for the association of the health insurance funds ('Genossenschaft der Krankenkassen'). His scientific treatises dealt most notably with the biogenesis of the nose.
Between 1907 and 1938 Emil Glas lived in Vienna, 1st district, Schottenring 10/1. His first wife Adele (born on September 15th, 1894), whom he had married in 1923, died in 1929. In November 1930 he married his second wife Brunhilde (born on August 1st, 1905).
Under the national-socialist regime he was subjected to racial persecution, his venia legendi was invalidated and on April 22, 1938 he was divested of his office and banned from the University of Vienna.
Emil Glas emigrated to the USA in October 1938, settled in New York and deceased on May 19th, 1958.
