Herbert GERSTL, born on April 27
th, 1913 in Neustadt, Lower Austria/Austro-Hungarian Empire (entitled residency ("heimatberechtigt") in 1938 for Wiener Neustadt, Lower Austria/Austria, Citizenship 1938: Austria), son of Johann Leopold Gerstl (merchant, 1887-19??) and Hermine Gerstl (née Jaul, 1887-1968), lived in Vienna's 2
nd district, Grosse Schiffgasse 17, was enrolled finally in the fall term 1937/38 at the Medical School in the 5
th and last year of his studies.
In 1938, after the takeover of power of National-Socialism he was forced to quit his studies for racist reason and to leave the University of Vienna ("Absolutorium" was certified on December 14
th, 1938).
He had to flee Vienna and was able to emigrate to the USA in time with his parents and his brother Ferry (b. 1923). They left Cherbourgh/France on April 1
st, 1939 on the
SS Queen Mary and landed in New York City, NY on April 6
th, 1939, where they also lived and worked in Manhattan for the time being and applied for American citizenship.
Herbert Gerstl enlisted on October 5
th, 1942 in the U. S. Army (Fort Jay Governors Island, New York), lived in the 1950s at 122
nd str., Richmond Hills, later in South Ozone Park and Jamaica, all in Queens, NY/USA. He was married to Zelda Gerstl (1924-2017) since the late 1940s.
Herbert Gerstl died on March 3
rd, 1999 in Jamaica, Queens, NY/USA and is buried at Montefiore Cemetery in Springfield Gardens, Queens, NY/USA.
