Paul FLECK, born on June 20
th, 1912 in Vienna/Austria (entitled residency ("heimatberechtigt") for Vienna/Austria, Citizenship: Austria), son of Leo Fleck (salesman), lived in Vienna's 9
th district, Loeblichgasse 4/5, was enrolled finally in the spring term 1938 at the Medical School in the 4
th year of his studies.
After the Anschluss in March 1938, he was allowed to continue his studies for at least two months in the spring term of 1938 within the framework of the 2% numerus clausus for Jewish students (the summer semester of 1938 was credited to him as valid on October 5
th, 1938), but was then forced to definitively discontinue his studies for racist reasons and had to leave the University of Vienna without a doctorate (leaving certificate dated December 13
th, 1938).
Paul Fleck had to flee Vienna, and after managing to obtain a U.S. visa on February 23
rd, 1940, he was able to emigrate to the U.S. on March 8th, 1940 via Trieste/Italy on the
SS Vulcania, arriving in New York, NY, on April 2
nd, 1940 (his cousin A. J. Multer was already living in Brooklyn, NY). He went to Long Beach, California, where his great uncle Adolph Rauvruck lived. Paul lived in Long Beach for a long time, later in Los Angeles and worked as a chemist, later as a salesman. He On th crossing he had met Ines Ciani from Friuli, who aldo went to California but joined her brother Amerigo Ciani in Berkeley/California, where she also studied and graduated. They were engaged on June 15
th, 1941, but their engagement fell through and Ines Ciani married Fred Dryden, a fellow Berkeley student. Paul Fleck was never able to complete his almost finished medical studies in the USA under the conditions of emigration.
Paul Fleck became a U.S. citizen on April 4
th, 1946, married Beverly Dorine Fleck, née Wright (1922-2008) on August 18th, 1947 (divorced 1969) with whom he had a son, Roger Fleck (married to Carol).
