Kurt Stefan ALTSCHUL, born on August 11th, 1917 in Vienna/Austria (entitled residency ("heimatberechtigt") for Vienna/Austria, citizenship 1938: Austria), son of Dr. Oskar Altschul (physician, 1975-1937) and his wife Gertrud, née Buxbaum (1888-1943), lived in Vienna's 7th district, Burggasse 89.
He had passed his school-leaving examination (Matura) at the Realgymnasium in Vienna in 1935 and had started to work as a commercial employee (correspondent) in the company "Austrosteg" (sales center of the enamel works and metal factories Austria & Steg), as well as an electromechanic. He had also completed a one-year commercial course and in 1937 had begun to study law at the University of Vienna, and was last enrolled in the 2nd year at the Law School in the spring term of 1938.
He was forced to discontinue his studies and leave the University of Vienna under National Socialism after the "Anschluss" for racist reasons.
His older brother Erich Altschul, who studied at the Medical School, was also expelled from the University of Vienna.
Since his father had died in the end of 1937 and he was dismissed from his job in 1938, the family was left without income. Kurt Stefan Altschul and his family had to flee Vienna and were able to emigrate in time and arrived in New York, NY/USA in 1939 with the SS President Harding. In September 1943, he had enlisted in the U.S. military service for the duration of the war and became a U.S. citizen on January 21st, 1944 (his mother had died in New York in 1943).
He married in the U.S. Paula Süssmann (d. 2006) from St. Pölten/Lower Austria, who had also been expelled from Austria, and on August 25th, 1947 their son Peter Gerald was born in New York (1947-2005).
Kurt S. Altschul lived in Flushing, New York City, NY/USA, where he also died on April 25th, 1970.
