Hertha Elisabeth ZIPPER (married: CHAVASSE), born on June 19th, 1918 in Vienna/Austria (entitled residency ("heimatberechtigt") for Vienna/Austria, citizenship 1938: Austria), daughter of Dr. Maximilian Zipper (1887-1942, physician) and Katharina Irene Zipper, née Polturak (1888-1942), lived in Vienna's 4th district, Karlsgasse 9, was enrolled finally in the spring term 1938 at the Philosophical School in the 2nd year of her studies and attended lectures in mathematics and physics.
In 1938, after the takeover of power of National-Socialism she was forced to quit her studies for racist reasons and to leave the University of Vienna.
She had to flee Austria and was able to emigrate to Great Britain in time, where she was living in Hornsey, Middlesex (Greater London), England with the occupational title "refugee student, training completed, not previously employed" in the October 1939 census. Also, when German refugees are registered as "enemy aliens," she is registered two months later in North-West London, as a single physics student, and exempt from internment.
Her parents also managed to escape from Austria to France in time and lived in Nice, but they were captured there after the German occupation and interned in the Drancy transit camp near Paris, from where they were deported to the Auschwitz [Oświęcim] concentration camp in German-occupied Poland on September 7th, 1942, and murdered only a month later.
Hertha Elisabeth Zipper married Harry Devereux Chavasse (1918-2004), an Englishman, in Hendon, Middlesex (Greater London) in early 1940 and they had three children: Ann, Pam and Michael (1942-1993). Little is yet known about her further education life and career.
Hertha E. Chavasse, née Zipper, died on July 30th, 1982 in Oxford, Oxfordshire, England.
