Karl WEININGER [later: Charles T. WINANT], born on March 16
th, 1918 in Vienna/Austria (entitled residency ('heimatberechtigt') for Vienna/Austria, Citizenship: Austria), son of Hanns Weininger (merchant) and Grete Weininger, PhD (née Kulka), lived in Vienna's 6
th district, Millergasse 40. He had graduated from high school ("Realgymnasium Wien 8") in summer 1936 and strted to study law in fall term 1936/37. He was enrolled finally in fall term 1937/38 at the Law School in the 2
nd year of his studies.
In 1938, after the takeover of power of National-Socialism he was forced to quit his studies for racist reason and to leave the University of Vienna.
He was able to flee from Vienna via Prague/Czechoslovakia [Czech Republic], where he obtained a visa for the USA on January 9
th, 1939, to Southhampton/England, and from there on March 24
th, 1939, he continued with the SS Manhattan to the USA, arriving in New York on March 30
th, 1939. After a few odd jobs, he was able to resume his studies at the University of Minneapolis. On February 20
th, 1943, he married Deborah Haagens (b. 1919), who had emigrated from Amsterdam, in Alexandria, Virginia - they had two children: Howard and Terry. On December 20
th, 1944, he became a naturalized U.S. citizen and changed his name to Charles T. Winant.
He died on June 5
th, 1991 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA.
