Tibor Sandor SUGAR, born on December 5th, 1916 in Budapest/Hungary (entitled residency ('heimatberechtigt') for Vienna/Austria, Citizenship: Austria) was the son of Eugen Sugar (jeweler) and lived in Viennas 6th district, Linke Wienzeile 4. He was enrolled at the Medical School of the University of Vienna from October 1935 on until the spring term 1938, when he was in the 3rd year of his medical studies. In 1938 he was forced to leave the university because of anti-Semitic perpetration and could not continue with his studies. After he was forced to terminate his studies in May 1938, he travelled to Paris with a group of fellow students. He left Paris and managed to emigrate to Great Britain and arrived in London on December 30, 1938 and worked in a pharmacy. In May 1940 he joined the British Broadcasting Corporation Monitoring Service in Evesham, being able to put his command of several languages to good use. There he also met Miss Joan Brinkler, who was an English monitor, and later on became his wife. The BBC moved to Reading about 1944 and they married in November 1945. Tibor Sandor Sugar gained British nationality in 1946 and was known thereafter as Alexander Tibor Sugar. They lived in Reading for the rest of their lives and Alexander Sugar continued to work for the BBC until he retired aged 60. They had three children, two sons and a daughter.
