Karl Maximilian STEINER (later Charles Max SHERIDAN), born on December 6th, 1916 in Innsbruck, Tyrol/Austro-Hungarian Empire (entitled residency ("heimatberechtigt") for Melk/Lower Austria, citizenship 1938: Austria), son of Dr. Karl Steiner (military physician, "Oberstarzt", 1881-1944) and Elisabeth Steiner, née Lederer (1885-1944), lived in Vienna's 7th district, Mariahilferstrasse 22 ("Stiftskaserne"), was enrolled finally in the spring term 1938 at the Medical School in the 3rd year of his studies.
His father was discharged from the army for racist reason as of April 25th, 1938 and he and his family were also dismissed from the service apartment in the Stiftskaserne, had to find a rented apartment at short notice and then lived in Vienna's 9th district, Porzellangasse 5.
Although his parents were both of the Protestant A. B. faith and he himself Roman Catholic, under National Socialism Karl Steiner was forced to abandon his studies and leave the University of Vienna for racist reasons after the "Anschluss". He was deprived of the spring term "due to lack of frequency" and a leaving certificate ("Abgangszeugnis") was issued on January 4th, 1939.
He had to flee Vienna and was still able to leave for England/United Kingdom in time. His parents remained behind in Vienna and were deported to the Theresienstadt ghetto [Terezín/Czech Republic] on October 9th, 1942 and from there to the Auschwitz [Oswiecim/Poland] extermination camp in October 1944 and murdered.
Karl Max Steiner had continued and completed his studies at the University in Ireland, earning his doctorate in 1942, and was then a medical practicioner at the West Kent General Hospital in Maidstone, Kent, England, in October 1942, exempt from internment as an enemy alien.
On March 23rd, 1943, he married Margaret Frances Patricia Rowan (1920-1999) at Holy Trinity, Maidstone, and became a British citizen on September 20th, 1946, in Surrey under the name Dr. Charles Max Sheridan. His wife was able to complete her medical studies at the University of Dublin in 1947 and earned a doctorate, too. They were then living in Ann's Gift, Fethard, Co.Tipperary, Ireland, then in 1951 in Dromin, Delgany. Co.Wicklow, Ireland, 1955-1959 at Meadowcroft, Whitburn Road, Cleadon, Sunderland. Co. Durham, England and from 1960 in Glamorgan, Wales, where they both also worked as general practitioners.
Dr. Charles Max Sheridan, nee Karl Steiner, died in December 2001 in Bridgend, Glamorgan, Wales/Great Britain.
