Norbert PREMINGER, born on February 20th, 1912 in Pniów/Poland (entitled residency ("heimatberechtigt") for Vienna/Austria, citizenship 1938: Austria), son of Jakob Preminger (1884-1964, private civil servant) and Bronia/Berta Preminger (née Drimer, 1889-?, dressmaker). The family had lived in Nadwórna, Galicia/Austria-Hungary [from 1919: Poland, today: Nadwirna|Надвірна/Ukraine] until the beginning of the First World War, then emigrated to Wiener Neustadt/Lower Austria and from 1919 lived in Vienna, where they last lived in Vienna's 2nd district, Glockengasse 25/20. Norbert Preminger was last enrolled in the spring term 1938 at the Medical School in the 4th year of his studies.
In 1938, after the takeover of power of National-Socialism he was forced to quit his studies for racist reason and to leave the University of Vienna (Leaving Certificate ("Abgangszeugnis") was issued on May 11th, 1938).
Norbert Preminger had to flee Vienna and was able to escape to Switzerland in time, where he lived in Bern and was able to finish his medical studies before he managed to emigrate to the USA via Lisbon/Portugal in April 1941. His parents were able to emigrate to the USA via Trieste to New York in November 1939, his brother Joachim J. Preminger (1923-1999) to Palestine [Israel] in April 1939, where he obtained citizenship in 1941, and later to the USA (Cincinnati).
Norbert Preminger lived and worked in Brooklyn, New York, NY, married Carol S, Shlansky (b. 1925) in Brooklyn in June 1945 and they had three children: Mona Jean (b. 1947), Ben MD Preminger (b. 1948) and Mark T Singer (b. 1950). He became a U.S. citizen on July 23rd, 1946.
Norbert Preminger died on January 1st, 2001 in New York, NY/USA.
