Arnold Rudolf BERNFELD (later: BERNS), born on February 23rd, 1916 in Vienna/Austria (entitled residency ("heimatberechtigt") for Vienna/Austria, citizenship 1938: Austria), son of Eduard/Efraim Bernfeld (1891-1972, merchant) and Laura Bernfeld, née. Adler (1894-1972), lived in Vienna's 2nd district, Wohlmutstrasse 15/24, was enrolled finally in the fall term 1937/38 at the Medical School in the 4th year of his studies (fall term 1937/38 was validated on February 16th, 1938).
He was forced to discontinue his studies and leave the University of Vienna under National Socialism after the "Anschluss" for racist reasons.
Arnold Bernfeld was forced to flee Vienna and in 1939 was able to emigrate in time to the USA, where he initially settled in New York City, NY, where he also married Getrude Rubinstein (1920-2005), a Viennese who had also been expelled from Austria, and soon daughter Barbara (1942) and son Lawrence Michael (1945-2020) were born. He worked as a diamond cutter in the Kings district of New York in the 1950s. In the process of becoming a U.S. citizen, he had changed his last name to Berns in 1946. He later lived in Ft. Lauderdale, California/USA.
Arnold R. Berns, née Bernfeld, died at the age of 86 on April 15th, 2002 in Plantation, Broward, FL/USA.
