Dr. Leopold Franz ENGELMANN, born on April 18, 1908 in Vienna, was the son of orthopedic Dr. Guido Engelmann (1876-1959). He had graduated in December 1932 and was employed as assistent doctor III. class ("Assistent III. Klasse") at the ambulatory of orthopedic surgery (head: Prof. Hass), a department of the Surgical University Clinic (head: Prof. Ranzi) until March 1938. After the takeover of power by National-Socialism in March 1938 he was forced to leave the University and the clinic for racist reason. Leopold Franz Engelmann had to flee from Austria and could emigrate to the USA. He could continue to work in the field of orthopedic surgery, was naturalized and became a US-citizen and changed his name to Francis L. Engelmann. He opened his practice in orthopedic surgery in Los Angeles/USA (Wilshire Boulevard).
