Preamble

Following the advent of the National Socialist regime in the year 1938, more than 2,700 mostly Jewish affiliates of the University of Vienna were dismissed and subsequently driven away and/or murdered - lecturers, students and administration employees. Furthermore, over 200 people were stripped of their academic titles.
In 2008, 70 years after the so-called "Anschluss" [annexation] and the pogroms of what came to be cynically called the "Kristallnacht" [Crystal Night], the University of Vienna commemorates this injustice and  ...

Hermann Maximilian STERNBERG, born on December 1st, 1900 in Vienna/Austro-Hungarian Empire, as son of Prof. Dr. Maximilian Sternberg (1863-1934) and Betty Sternberg (née Schweinburg). He was unpaid assistant ("unbesoldeter Hochschulassistent") at the walk-in-clinic for orthopedic surgery (head: Prof. Hass) at the I surgical university clinic (head: Prof. Ranzi) at the Medical School of the University of Vienna in 1938.

He had studied medicine at the University of Vienna and graduated there on April 3rd, 1925 and was awarded the academic degree of a  "Dr.med.univ." (M.D.).

In the aftermath of the "Anschluss" he was fired for racist reason and was forced to leave the universty. He had to flee from Vienna and could emigrate to the USA.

Hermann M. Sternberg, M.D. deceased aged 73 on April 24, 1974 in New York City, NY, USA.
