After he had graduated from high school (Bundesgymnasium in Vienna's 7th district) in the summer of 1932, he began to study at the Law School of the University of Vienna. He was enrolled finally in spring term 1936 in the 4th and last year of his studies.

In 1938, Ernst Schulmann was no longer enrolled at the Law School, but was preparing for the final examinations ("Rigorosen"). After a long period of uncertainty, he was able to complete his studies and to obtain his doctorate on July 21st, 1938, under numerous symbolic discriminations in the context of a "non-Aryan doctorate", while at the same time being banned from working in the entire German Reich.

Ernst Schulmann emigrated in September 1938 first to London/Great Britain, and was able to leave on the ship SS Pennland from Southampton to the USA on October 2nd, 1938, where he arrived in New York City, NY on October 12th and lived for the time being with his aunt, Mrs. P. Bisenz at 894 Rivers Drive 1939 then in Charlotte, Mecklenburg, North Carolina. He married Louise Weill (1912-1982), an American, in Atlanta on March 27th, 1941, and they lived at 662 Park Drive, Atlanta, Georgia. He then also became a U.S. citizen on January 28th, 1943, and was naturalized under the anglicized name "Ernest Shulman." In 1947, their first son(1947-2016) was born, soon followed by another son.

Ernst Schulmann's older brother Otto Schulmann (b. February 4th, 1905 in Vienna), who had worked as a private teacher of German, French, and shorthand from 1925 onward and had earned the degree of Dr. phil. in German Studies from the Philosophical School of the University of Vienna on July 22nd, 1931 (dissertation: "Zum Alexander des Rudolf von Ems"), died around the "Anschluss" on March 14th, 1938 in Vienna.

His sister Erna Schulmann (b. January 27th, 1911 in Vienna) married Bernhard Schumann in 1930, the couple emigrated to the USA in November 1941 and had a son and a daughter.

Ernst Schulmann's mother Frieda Schulmann, née Frede Ellenbogen - she divorced her husband in 1918, remarried him in 1919 and finally divorced him in 1924 - emigrated first to Cuba, later on to the USA and lived in New York City, NY/USA in 1940.

Dr. Ernest Shulman died on February 10, 1957 in Atlanta, Fulton, Georgia, USA.
