Preamble

Following the advent of the National Socialist regime in the year 1938, more than 2,700 mostly Jewish affiliates of the University of Vienna were dismissed and subsequently driven away and/or murdered - lecturers, students and administration employees. Furthermore, over 200 people were stripped of their academic titles.
In 2008, 70 years after the so-called "Anschluss" [annexation] and the pogroms of what came to be cynically called the "Kristallnacht" [Crystal Night], the University of Vienna commemorates this injustice and  ...

Hans FRIEDMANN, born on February 5th, 1914 in Vienna/Austria (entitled residency ('heimatberechtigt') for Vienna/Austria, Citizenship: Austria), son of Otto Friedmann (merchant), lived in Vienna 2nd, Böcklinstrasse 63, began to study chemistry at the University of Vienna in 1932. In the mid-1930ies he fought against Austrofascism and was a member, later head, of the resistance group "Rote Studenten" ("Red Students") in the Physics- and Chemistry-Department in the Waehringer Strasse 42:

(Speech by Dr. Hans Friedmann, Memorial event "In Memoriam Dr. Kurt Horeischy und Dr. Hans Vollmar", April 7th, 2005)

In the beginning of 1937 Hans Friedmann began to work on his doctoral thesis ('Dissertation') and was enrolled finally in spring term 1938 at the Philosophical School in the 6th year of his studies and took courses in Chemistry and Physics.

His brother living in California/USA made it easier for him to get a passport and an affidavit and he could leave Austria in April 1938. He emigrated to Colombia, where he found a job as a chemist in a cement factory.

From 1947 on he lived in Sweden.
In 1953 he returned to Austria and was employed by the company LOBA-Chemie. Along with his work he resumed his studies at the University of Vienna, managed to complete his doctoral thesis, which he had continued in Colombia, and graduated at the Philosophical School at the University of Vienna in chemistry in July 1956 with the academic degree 'Dr.phil.'. After he had worked for the LOBA-Chemie in Vienna-Heiligenstadt for seven years, he became manager of a factory for reagents and fine chemicals in Fischamend/Lower Austria.

Hans Friedmann was volunteer at the Documentation Centre of Austrian Resistance (Dokumentationsarchivs des österreichischen Widerstandes (DÖW)) and active as a contemporary witness  and as an anti-fascist activist.

Hans Friedmann died on June 29th, 2006 in Västeras/Sweden. His widow lives in Sweden. His son lives in Austria.
