Preamble

Following the advent of the National Socialist regime in the year 1938, more than 2,700 mostly Jewish affiliates of the University of Vienna were dismissed and subsequently driven away and/or murdered - lecturers, students and administration employees. Furthermore, over 200 people were stripped of their academic titles.
In 2008, 70 years after the so-called "Anschluss" [annexation] and the pogroms of what came to be cynically called the "Kristallnacht" [Crystal Night], the University of Vienna commemorates this injustice and  ...

Hermann HELFGOTT, born on September 8th, 1913 in Bosnia-Herzogovina/Austro-Hungarian Empire [later: Yugoslavia, today: Novo Miloševo/Serbia] (entitled residency ('heimatberechtigt') for Beodra/Yugoslavia, Citizenship: Yugoslavia), son of Kolman Helfgott (cantor, merchant), lived in Vienna's 2nd district, Obere Donaustrasse 89A/6, was enrolled finally in the spring term 1938 at the Philosophical School in the 4th and final year of his studies and took courses in History, Geography and Oriental Studies.

He registered for the final exams on December 3rd, 1937 already and passed the first exam ('Rigorosum') on January 21st and March 5th, 1938. But then the examination procedure was interrupted and he could not finish his studies.

In 1938, after the takeover of power of National-Socialism he was forced to quit his studies for racist reason and to leave the University of Vienna.
