Following the advent of the National Socialist regime in the year 1938, more than 2,700 mostly Jewish affiliates of the University of Vienna were dismissed and subsequently driven away and/or murdered - lecturers, students and administration employees. Furthermore, over 200 people were stripped of their academic titles.

Wilhelm KNÖPFELMACHER (born on August 25th, 1866 in Boskowitz, Moravia/Austro-Hungaria [Boskovice/Czech Republic], died on April 14th, 1938 in Vienna by suicide, erroneously also often mentioned: on April 23rd, 1938) was in 1938 extraordinary emerited professor for Kinderheilkunde at the Medical School of the University of Vienna.

Knöpfelmacher studied medicine at the universities of Vienna and Prague. After he was graduated in Vienna in 1891, he worked at the II. Medical Clinic with Prof. Kahler and between 1894 and 1900 as resident (assistant physician) at the municipal Karolinen Children's Hospital in Vienna 9th district, Sobieskigasse 31. In 1901 he became head of the hospital. In the same year he was promoted "Privatdozent" at the University of Vienna, and in 1911 ao. He published several scientific books, e.g. "Erkrankungen des Neugeborenen", "Säuglings- und Kinderpflege" (1910).
He lived in Vienna 9th distrcit, Günthergasse 3. In 1934 he was retired.

Wilhelm Knöpfelmacher was persecuted in times of Nazism as a Jew, lost his position and was thrown out of the university in 1938. A month after the "Anschluss" he committed suicide.
