Preamble

Following the advent of the National Socialist regime in the year 1938, more than 2,700 mostly Jewish affiliates of the University of Vienna were dismissed and subsequently driven away and/or murdered - lecturers, students and administration employees. Furthermore, over 200 people were stripped of their academic titles.

Hermann MERL, born on July 3rd, 1912 in Vienna/Austria (entitled residency ('heimatberechtigt') for Vienna/Austria, Citizenship: Austria), son of Littmann Merl (retail dealer, Vienna's 2nd district, Wehlistrasse 218/10), lived in Vienna's 21st [today: 22nd] district at the Old Danube in Florian-Berndl-Gasse 37, was enrolled finally in the fall term 1937/38 at the Medical School in the 2nd year of his studies (fall term 1937/38 was validated on February 16th, 1938, Leaving Certificate ('Abgangszeugnis') was issued on December 6th, 1938).

In 1938, after the takeover of power of National-Socialism he was forced to quit his studies for racist reason and to leave the University of Vienna.

Hermann MERL had to flee and could emigrate to the USA. He could finish his medical studies, got married and was divorced, worked in the medical-technical laboratory and joint the US-Army in September 1943. Dr. Merl had adapted his prename to "Herman". After the end of the Second World War Herman Merl was a member of the military intelligence service and one of the interrogators of Adolf Hitlers physicians (Dr. Theodor Morell, Dr. Karl Brandt u.a.) in Germany in September 1945. These interviews were part of the dossier "Hitler as seen by his doctors" of the US-Army in 1948.

He deceased on January 16th, 2004 in Los Angeles County/California, USA.
