Preamble

Following the advent of the National Socialist regime in the year 1938, more than 2,700 mostly Jewish affiliates of the University of Vienna were dismissed and subsequently driven away and/or murdered - lecturers, students and administration employees. Furthermore, over 200 people were stripped of their academic titles.
In 2008, 70 years after the so-called "Anschluss" [annexation] and the pogroms of what came to be cynically called the "Kristallnacht" [Crystal Night], the University of Vienna commemorates this injustice and  ...

Raoul (Raul) Heinrich OCHS, born on February 1st, 1913 in Vienna (entitled residency ('heimatberechtigt') for Vienna/Austria, Citizenship: Austria), son of Dr. Hugo Ochs (lawyer, deceased in 1934) and Annie, nee Blaha (deceased on September 10, 1938). They lived in Vienna's 18th district, Gentzgasse 127/10 and he studied at the Medical School of the University of Vienna.
Raoul Ochs wasn't enrolled any more in 1938, but was preparing for the final exams ('Rigorosen'). He could finally finish his studies and graduated on October 31st, 1938, but only with the discriminating ceremony of a 'Nichtarierpromotion', which included at the same time that he was banned from his profession.

After his studies from April to May 1937 an shortly after the "Anschluss" from March to May 1938 he had psychological problems and was treated at the psychiatric university-clinic, but passed the medical without any problem in autumn 1938. But because he was banned from profession as a doctor for racist reason he remained unemployed and after the death of his mother he had to live from the support of his relatives.

In May 1939 he was conscripted to the "Wehrmacht" (military service) as an "Unterarzt" and had to go to Bohemia and Moravia, to Budweis [České Budějovice/Czech Republic] but was not allowed to practice as a doctor but as a typist (HS Staffel 45). In Autumn 1939 he should get an advancement but could not bring in the obligate "Ariernachweis" and was dismissed from the army and returned to Vienna in 1940, living in Viennas' 8th district, Josefstaedter Str. 105/22 as a subtenant with his uncle Franz Blaha. (In April 1940 all so called "Mischlinge" were dismissed from the "Wehrmacht" [OKW-edict Nr. 254 from April 8, 1940]). Being unemployed he was sent to different types of occupations by the employment office, e.g. shoveling snow in winter, he was not allowed to work as a doctor.

On April 30 he wanted to point to his situation and provoked a dispute with the porter of the hospital Goldenes Kreuz but was arrested by the police and interned at Viennas' mental hospital Baumgartner Hoehe 1 (Steinhof).

He was treated with shock-therapy with Cardiazol and other treatments. He died on April 16, 1941, just skin and bones (from 110 to 72 pounds) from malnutrition, dehydration and sepsis.
