Preamble

Following the advent of the National Socialist regime in the year 1938, more than 2,700 mostly Jewish affiliates of the University of Vienna were dismissed and subsequently driven away and/or murdered - lecturers, students and administration employees. Furthermore, over 200 people were stripped of their academic titles.

Gusta SLOPKOWITZER (née Klarmann), born on October 27th, 1902 in Krakow, Gallicia, Austro-Hungaria [Krakow/Poland] (entitled residency ('heimatberechtigt') for Vienna/Austria, Citizenship: Austria), daughter of Josef Klarmann (merchant), lived in Wien 2, Schönngasse 19, was enrolled finally in the fall term 1937/38 at the Medical School in the 3rd year of her studies (fall term 1937/38 was validated on February 25th, 1938). She was forced to quit her studies for racist reason and was thrown out of the University of Vienna.

Gusta Slopkowitzer had jobbed in the field of nursing during her medical studies at the university in Vienna and in 1942 she was registered in Vienna as a "Jewish nurse". In October 1942 she was deported to Theresienstadt, later to the concentration camp Auschwitz. She survived and after the liberation of the camp she returned to Vienna in October 1945, continued her studies and graduated in medicine. From 1949 on she practiced as a physician in Vienna.
